So I used a method that is usually hit and miss but works well on many an occasion, 'just lurk around several forums and other places of the same kind and try to see what falls into a category you think you might like and happens to be mentioned quite frequently that you know the name well. That is how I came to the decision to watch Binbougami Ga.
Binbou-gami Ga (貧乏神が) literal translation 'God of Misfortune' is a story that follows one Ichiko Sakura, who happens to be a busty 16yr old high-school girl who despite being already pretty fortunate enough to have an enviable bust size, also happens to have brains of considerable quality (yes anime has taught us that 1300135[bewbs] = No brains). As though that is not enough, she has the looks of a model, the wealth of her parents is massive and she lives this bourgeois life that you'd kill for.
There is a catch though. Sakura happens to be too fortunate that she also sucks fortune out of anyone and everyone around her, this triggers the attention of the gods, in 'godville' who send over one Momiji, a god of misfortune, to come in and rectify this fault and give her a life deserving of a normal fortune. Cue chaos, laughs, gags (Too many I forgot to count) and more laughs.
This show starts off with the slapstick funny, as is expected of comedy series. I think I had stomach aches from laughing too hard, it had all the ingredients to be as funny I imagined:
A perverted Monk one 'Bobby', an aloof classmate 'keita', that rare tomboy 'Ranmaru'
This is going to be a long post alright....
This show despite being outright comedy, explored some very interesting subjects that actually made it that little bit better than I first thought it would be. My initial opinion of Sakura was that she was an insufferable b*tch! and that did not change(I repeat my OPINION). Her interpersonal relations were horrible and she had a stuck up air to her that just filled me with disgust. I mean I do not care what her reasons were I hated her character.
The show started off with a lot of comedy and gags but by the 4th episode I was growing tired of it and the repetitive gags and of course Sakura's character did not help, I really hated her! Thank heavens for Bobby, he brought me back from the brink of dropping this and his cameo appearances never ceased to entertain.
Then of course Sakura starts to make friends and her interactions with other characters begin to better define who she really was and why she was the way she was. I loved the episode at Keita's house when she undermines their way of life the reactions she managed to draw out of them were quite good, her reflection after that also interesting.
I found Momiji's role, albeit filled with a lot of gags was a massive plus for me to like the show. Momiji is a lazy, couldn't be arsed god of misfourtune but for some reason got pretty attached to Sakura after realizing her nature. Momiji tries to act like a guide to Sakura, all the while trying to rob her of her fortune(With a syringe the size you could never imagine).
Do I recommend the show?
It was a good, nice and fun pastime. If your are in search of something deeper that explores several themes and takes the character development as something important, then do not waste your time.
I would give it a 5/10, since apart from giving me some laughs, it was not that interesting and the storyline wasn't all that(to me). I think there have been better comedy shows than this that did not have to get too cheesy to sell the joke.
Do not get me wrong, I liked the show, I just do not feel it was worth all the hype. I mean on many occasions during my overview, I wanted to just turn it off and let it go but Bobby, Momo, Kumagai and Ibuki saved the day.
My review is crappy! I know, I haven't a clue what I was supposed to do, but the next one will be better, I promise.
